We’re donating up to $45k to help communities impacted by bushfires… and we need your help

We made a commitment to help communities impacted by the Australian bushfires, do you know a bushfire relief organisation who could benefit from up to $45k*? Find out how you can nominate them

In light of world events, the devastating bushfires that erupted in New South Wales in November 2019 may have been forgotten by some.

However, as people face lockdown and the country’s borders remain closed, communities, families and environmentalists are continuing to rebuild after the damage.

What caused the bushfires?

Bushfires are an intrinsic part of Australia's environment.

So much so, that some native plant species, like Eucalyptus, depend on fire to regenerate, while others are fire prone.

Indigenous Australians have long used fire as a land management tool to prevent intense, uncontrolled fires.

The Bushfires that started in November and raged until February 2020 are being described as unprecedented.

A culmination of perfect conditions including strong winds, prolonged drought and searing temperatures and the effects of climate change, contributed to making these particular bushfires so devastating.

According to a study submitted to Natural Hazards and Earth Systems, global warming has pushed up the odds of such extreme fire events occurring in southeastern Australia by at least 30 percent

What impact have the fires had?

By the time the fires were declared contained, they had burned 2.2 million acres of Australian land that was home to billions of plant and animal species, and destroyed over 3000 homes.

As a country with extraordinarily high levels of biodiversity, Australia is at risk of losing a significant proportion as a result of the fires. Much of Australia’s biodiversity is unique to Australia, making it a global loss

Australian Academy of Science Fellow Professor Chris Dickman has estimated that Australia has lost at least a billion birds, mammals and reptiles this bushfire season. This figure does not include insects, bats, fish and frogs.
