Hygge: Create cosiness + care for the space you love

Hygge homebody

Every season we’re greeted with new trends, attitudes, likes and dislikes. What’s hot and what’s not is influenced as much by current affairs and the economy as it is by the trend setters, and we can always rely on the Nordic countries to take the sensible, responsible and moral approach and make it effortlessly cool.

With their roots firmly fixed in the environmentally conscious, Scandinavia are carving-out an appealing route that allows for the rest of the world to follow in its footsteps and prioritise earth-loving choices.

So naturally, we have been loving all-things Hygge since the word started popping up all over the internet.

What is Hygge and where does it come from?

First, let's start with how you say it.

Pronounced "hoo-ga," this Danish concept was born in the early 1800’s and cannot be translated to any one single word but encompasses a feeling of cosy contentment and well-being through enjoying the simple things in life. It was then picked up by Britain in recent years where it became so popular, it ranked number 2 in the Collin words of the Year 2016.

From here, it was America’s turn to fall in love with the lifestyle which then spread worldwide with more than 6.5 million people tagging #hygge in their posts on Instagram.

So why are we talking about Hygge now?

Think candles and homemade bread, puzzles and boardgames, and creating a home hideaway. Sound familiar?

More recently we have had to adopt this lifestyle philosophy without much of a choice, spending more time in our homes. Whether it’s working from home or reading a good book on your couch, it goes without saying that now more than ever we should be looking to create balance at home, find perfection in the simple and take the environment into consideration. Hygge is all about keeping things simple (think Scandi-style interior design) so where better to start than to look at how we can make small adjustments to our daily routine that result in sustainable, healthy and cost-conscious living.

USE LESS POWER

Switch to LED lightbulbs, rechargeable batteries and energy saving appliances. Turn out the lights when you leave the room, hang out your clothes to dry, and during the cooler months, use textiles such as throw rugs, blankets (hygge is all about being cosy after all) and blinds to keep in the heat.

CREATE LESS WASTE

Organise your recycling by keeping separate boxes for cardboard, glass and metal. Reuse jars and boxes that will work well for storage and plan meals effectively, store leftovers in reusable containers.

USE LESS WATER

Time your showers to 5 minutes maximum, if your shower takes time to warm up, use a bucket to capture the running water and use on your garden bed. Turn water off when you’re brushing your teeth and clean with ENJO to reduce cleaning water use by 50%.
