How to create a healthier home for the year ahead

It’s the beginning of a brand New Year, a time for making exciting plans, setting life goals, reflecting on the year just passed and getting into gear for the year ahead.

We tend to automatically set goals that involve an improved diet and exercise routine, things like dry January or #30dayabchallenge. Starting the year full of healthy habits is decidedly wonderful, and in addition to our personal health, our home's health is equally important for a happy and prosperous year ahead.

As you can imagine, our health and our home’s health are closely linked. As our sanctuary, the place we rest our heads at night, ensuring your home is clean and healthy is central to your physical and mental well-being. From picking up bugs from unclean surfaces to alleviating allergies and lowering your stress levels, keeping it clean has even been linked to improved concentration and happiness.

To kick start your 2017 with a healthy home and positive outlook, we’ve put together some healthy-home inspiration that will give you a fresh home and fresh mind.

Our home is our hideaway, we spend time filling our homes with our most prized possessions and they should be our favourite place. You really can’t beat that feeling of walking into a clean and tidy home, especially after a long day at work. But as life can get in the way of even the most conscientious homeowner, clutter can build before we’ve even realised it. Cluttered space, whether it be in your main living area or just the laundry, can prevent you from actually relaxing and enjoying your space at home…it can be a big distraction too.

Start by identifying the most cluttered areas in your home and then prioritise the areas most in need of attention first. In that order work at decluttering one space at a time, over time. Trying to do it all in one hit can be overwhelming and you’re unlikely to declutter most effectively.

Try and keep your declutter organised, keep the items that are appropriate for recycling, upcycling or for charity shop donations together, and set yourself a deadline for actually getting rid of your clutter…just because your clutter is now organised all in one space doesn’t change the fact that this is still clutter.

Once you’ve cleared out the items that are not necessary, it’s time to think about organising those items you’re keeping. Reusing boxes and bags to store items you don’t use every day is a great way to protect them and keep your house looking clutter free, labelling your boxes is also a good idea!

There are items in our home that we use every single day, we rely on them as a part of our daily routine.

Make your life easier by organising your home to make your daily routine more streamlined. For example, if you’re starting the New Year on a smoothie health kick - make sure your smoothies maker is easily accessible and you have your fridge readily organised with your breakfast bowl ingredients.

If you like to hit the gym or walk the dog first thing in the morning, have your runners ready to go and your dog’s lead hanging at the front door, and if you work 9-5, keep your shoes, keys, bags stored away neatly near the front door ready to grab when you’re on the go.

Simply organising your home to your agenda will make both your home and your life more efficient.

Healthy eating is all about making the right choices, increasing your intake of fresh foods, fruits and vegetables. More fresh and nutritious produce means less preservatives, therefore it’s imperative food is stored appropriately to make sure it’s safe for consumption and to prolong it’s life. Think about investing in airtight reusable storage containers, make sure you rotate the contents of your fridge to prevent waste and food spoiling, and check out Matt Stone’s herb hack on the best way to store and prolong the life of your fresh herbs!

For a complete fridge detox start by removing all the items from your fridge and grouping them into dairy, meat and greens, making sure you compost any green ingredients that may have gone bad. As the keeper of the food you ingest, a clean fridge is so important, using chemical-free methods to ensure your fridge is not only clean but safe, is definitely the way to go. ENJO lifts, traps and removes dirt and bacteria from surfaces using just water – no chemicals - keeping your food safe and your fridge clean.

When returning food back to your fridge, place foods that are safe to eat without cooking on the very top shelf (such as leftovers, cheeses and deli meats), and from there, foods that require the most cooking to be safe to eat towards the bottom (such as chicken), this way if there is any cross contamination, you can be sure the food is cooked adequately enough to kill any bacteria that may be present.

Remember that the fridge door is the warmest part of the fridge, so it’s sensible to only really store condiments here.

Keeping your home clean and dust free is more important for your health than you might originally think. Dust is an allergen that builds in our homes, and considering 80% of people who suffer from allergies also suffer from asthma, this makes dust a very prevalent asthma trigger along with cleaning chemicals, pets and cooking smoke.

Maintaining a regular dust and vacuum routine is one way to minimise the build-up of dust in the home, and the more often you quickly zip around with the dust buster, the easier the cleaning process will actually is.

ENJO Living Range fibres are specially designed to pick up and trap dust within their unique weave, meaning instead of moving dust around the home, they effectively remove dust, for a more effective clean. The ENJO Dust Floor Fibre is so quick and simple to use, you won’t even need the vacuum to keep your home dust free.

Bringing the outdoors in is an easy clean for your home...especially for the plant lovers among us. Plants not only look beautiful, adding depth and texture to your home, they also create an overwhelming sense of calm and contentment, they are therapeutic and inspire creativity…making them the perfect addition to your home.

Indoor air pollution is often overlooked as we focus on the outdoor air pollution that so often frequents the news headlines, but indoor air pollution is just as, if not more important for our everyday health.

We spend a large amount of time in our homes, and without even realising it we create our very own microenvironments, and due to the chemical and synthetic nature of a lot of products we bring into our home, the air we are breathing isn’t entirely clean.

Picking out the right leafy lovelies can mean a healthier home as plants work to remove and filter toxins in the air and release oxygen. Read our post on five helpful house plants for a clean air and healthy home!

Start the year as you mean to go on – living life healthier, in a healthier home! Your cleaning routine can affect your health and often goes un-thought of, especially since cleaning itself is something we associate with keeping a healthy home…the way you clean and the products you use often seems irrelevant.

However, minimizing the use of chemicals in your home comes with a myriad of health benefits; chemical irritants can trigger asthma, eczema and if used in your kitchen during food preparation the risk of ingestion. Considering a lot of the chemicals used in cleaning products have explicit health warnings, minimal use in the home would be preferred.

Changing any routine comes with its challenges, and when it comes to cleaning, it’s hard to imagine you can get the same ‘level’ of clean (ie removing dirt, bacteria and dust from your home's surfaces) using nothing but water and ENJO. Society has become accustomed to the idea of obliterating dirt and bacteria with chemicals, when in fact it has been proven that ENJO removes dirt and bacteria more effectively than chemical cleaners.

The unique weave of the ENJO fibres are specially designed to clean certain surfaces and work to lift and then trap dirt and bacteria which are then killed when the products are washed. It’s a simple change to your cleaning routine that will offer a healthier way of living, a cleaner home and is a great value alternative to chemical cleaners as ENJO fibres are reusable and last up to 3 years.

Now available to purchase through Afterpay, you can ENJO clean now and pay later.

Everyone should feel content in their own home, and feng shui is all about finding that balance and harmony in the elements. Start by creating an entrance way that’s welcoming, making sure that nothing clutters or blocks your path preventing the positive energy from flowing through your home.

Things break, it’s life, but keeping broken objects in your home is said to reflect a sense of disconnect, if they are not working, they are useless, and bring negative energy in your home. Be proactive, fix, repair or recycle broken items, and feel the broken energy flow from your life.

We spend a lot of time in the bedroom, it’s important, it’s a place we feel relaxed and have the opportunity to rest and rejuvenate. Make sure your bed is facing but not aligned with the doorway, this strategic placement offers a sense of security.
